junkyard garden

violets blossom along
the vehicle’s fragmented
windshield frame—

a reminder that time
provides the dimension for
replacement but not always

according to the plots and plans
of insurance agents and repairmen.
sometimes life intervenes after

an accident or a loss with
unexpected vibrancy, a recollection
of colors that might have gone

unnoticed before the damage,
but emerge afterward with
growing significance.

such eruptions affirm
the nature of earth: everything
to which we cling will

eventually be taken from us
and laid in a field somewhere
for newness to take root.
